Family Gathering - 23rd July 2016

If you have connections to Baughen, Baughan, Baugham, Baughn, Boffin or Baffin families or ancestors you are invited to a family gathering on 23rd July 2016 at Great Rollright Village Hall, Great Rollright, Oxfordshire, England.

This is an opportunity to mix with others that share common heritage, even if not all roots are joined, in one of the ancestral villages [Baughans were established in Great Rollright before the start of the Parish Registers].

Location and Time

The meeting will be held in the Village Hall, High Street, Great Rollright OX7 5RH [Ordnance Survey ref SP 322 314] between 12:15pm and 17:30pm. The hall can easily accommodate 80 people.

Car Parking

The car park for the hall allows for 30 vehicles. There are very few other parking locations in the village.

Refreshments

I will be paying for the hire of the hall and for the cost of tea, coffee and biscuits. If anyone wishes to bring and share other refreshments please feel free to do so. There is no pub (the 'Unicorn Inn' is now derelict but was originally built by a Baughan) or shop in the village. There is a cafe at the Hill Barn Farm shop, which is not very far away (see map below).

Do bring a picnic. At the rear of the hall is a veranda and a grassed area.

Depending on the numbers attending we will need help with the kitchen (and cleaning up at the end).

Children

Children are welcome but parents are asked to make sure that they do not spoil the enjoyment of others. There is a large play area adjacent to the village hall (see photo below).

Dogs

Please do not bring dogs into the hall unless they are for assistance.

Talks

We are still planning some short talks but the current topics we are considering are DNA in Family History and the 1939 Register. If you have other topics please let me know. And if there are Family History questions or topics you would like answered again please let me know, preferably before the day.

Bring Along

If you have any awards etc. for your Baughen etc. family line please do bring them along for others to see. WW1 medals are of particular interest at this time as we remember the service given 100 years ago. And of course old photographs help us all understand the backgrounds that our ancestors lived through.

No Smoking

There is no smoking allowed in the hall. If you do smoke outside please give consideration to other people around.

Exploring the village and around

Some of the roads don't have pavements and therefore please be careful if you explore the village. There are Baughan gravestones in the local churchyard. There is a Baughan cottage but I'm currently not sure of the situation as there has been considerable development in the vicinity. The 'Unicorn Inn' is now derelict is almost opposite the village hall. It, and the land behind it were owned by Baughans in the 1840s.

If you intend to visit other villages and towns in the area please let me know if you require further information.

Accomodation

Some people may wish to stay in the area prior or post the meeting. You have to go to Chipping Norton for any reasonable size hotel. There are of course a number of Bed and Breakfast places. There is a caravan site in Great Rollright.

Costs

This event is free to attendees. All other costs and expenses are at the attendees' expense.

Attending?

Can you please let me know by emailing me at gathering@baughen.co.uk if you are intending to join us on the day. It would also be useful to know how many children are coming.

Further questions?

If you have any further questions about the event please contact me via cliff@baughen.co.uk .

Exploring further

If you don't know the area around Great Rollright you may wish to explore before or after the meeting. Chipping Norton is the nearest town. The Rollright Stones are the nearest ancient monument. Blenheim Palace in Woodstock and Oxford are of course the main tourist attractions. The Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum in Woodstock is relatively new and visitors may not be aware of. Baughen,Baughan, Boffin etc. families have lived in most of the local hamlets, villages and towns in the area and they include Long Compton, Bloxham, Banbury, Bicester, Lower Heyford, Charlbury, Milton under Wychwood and Witney.

In 1997 I did organise a trip around Oxfordshire of some of the towns and villages. I've condensed the information from then and made it available in the 'Tour of North Oxfordshire' document. I'm sure that the roads have changed since then and therefore please do not expect it to be exactly the same.

Previous Gatherings

I've put some photos from previous gatherings on a separate page.
